2ND EXPEDITON, KILIMANJARO
CYCLING ON THE ROOF OF AFRICA
Samar Khan became the 1st Pakistani to have cycled up on the roof of Africa, Kilimanjaro in Dec 2017.
Her expedition was sponsored by ISPR (Pakistan Army).
Mount Kilimanjaro is a dormant volcano in Tanzania. It has three volcanic cones: Kibo, Mawenzi, and Shira. It is the highest mountain in Africa and the highest single free-standing mountain above sea level in the world: 5,895 metres (19,341 ft) above sea level and about 4,900 metres (16,100 ft) above its plateau base. It is the highest volcano in Africa and the Eastern Hemisphere.
It was Samar’s first international expedition and she had the opportunity to climb the dormant volcano and bike on it. It took her 7 days from Moshi gate to Uhuru peak(5895m). She crossed dense forest, biked through moorlands and alpine desert right before the base of the mountain. She started to climb the final stage at midnight with her bike and reached the summit around 8am. She called her expedition, ‘Riding Kibo’, as Kibo is on the of the volcanic cones she was about to reach on her bicycle.
She wanted to represent Pakistan in the world of adventure sports, with mountain biking as her identity and strength. Coming from a small village named ‘Dir’ in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Pakistan; it was an extraordinary moment and feat for her to achieve and inspire her fellow women of her community.
